If you receive my newsletter you'll know I've been gathering creative inspiration like a demon over the last few months. There's so much great stuff out there!
So here are 12 things I thought were worth sharing this month:
Ever wished you could meander through a museum from the cosy comfort of your own home? Lots of galleries and museums have great websites where you can access exhibitions, collections and audio tours. I also use the free Bloomberg Connects App access to exhibitions etc from over 100's of museums across the world. My current favourite is the Hunterian Art Gallery Glasgow
We cannot fail to be moved by the Middle East crisis. Maisara Baroud, a Palestinian artist from Gaza, says his drawings have become "the special way to help me overcome death for a bit.”
The Tate Britain is currently hosting the Turner Prize. Finalist Claudette Johnson's portraits are sublime and so full of love. ‘There’s something quite powerful about just giving space to the presence of a Black woman.’ - Claudette Johnson
If you are nipping to the Tate Britain for the Turner prize why not take a left and view a collection of sculptures by one of my favourite artists - Henri Gaudier-Brzeska. His work can also be seen at Kettles Yard, Cambridge - you won't be disappointed with a visit to either. ‘Movement is the translation of life, and if art depicts life, movement should come into art, since we are only aware of life because it moves’. Henri Gaudier-Brzeska.
‘This space belongs to you, as it does to everybody.’ - Damel Carayol.
Settle in as we join tour guide and artist Damel for an African Heritage tour through the galleries at Tate Britain.
Supporting the Arts - The legendary artist Julie Mehretu has donated $2m to the Whitney Museum, NY, so that under 26s can have free entry for the next 3 years! BTW EU citizens under 26's go free in Paris! Wouldn't that be an amazing direction of travel for the UK?
'Not all artists exhibit' - For Phyllida Barlow, art and artists exist regardless of whether they are seen by an audience. But you can currently see her work at Hauser & Wirth, Somerset. I love her work and you can see my Artist Notes on her here
Here's an inspiring podcast with the Sewing Bee Patrick Grant - seems like a really lovely chap!
It's fun to see the locations for famous paintings.
I might just give Lino Cutting a go!
One of my favourite songs! Along side moving stories connected to Joan Baez's Diamonds and Rust.
I'm fresh back from Huw Locke's thought provoking exhibition at the British Museum. What Have We Here? illustrates the brutal and lasting effects of Empire. Offering up many questions and the opportunity for us to do better! Well worth a visit!
Thanks for being here - hope you found an inspirational spark. Til next time.
